To Whom It May Concern: A Like Letter

I like you. Do you like me?
Cool.
Do you want to try this and see where this could go?
Okay.
I'm going to need you for some things. Is that cool?
I won't need you to feel fulfilled in life. I won't need you in order to feel good about myself. That's not what I mean.
I'm going to need you to let me know that I'm in. That I'm the number you're playing in love's roulette.
I'm going to need your kindness and I'm going to need your company.
I'm going to need your patience and I'm going to need your faith.
I'm going to need your attention and your care. Not constantly. And not at injury to you. But I'm going to need to know that you're there.
I'm going to need you to talk to me about your day and lay your troubles at our communal table. Don't keep them swallowed inside you until it forms a dark, hard rock.
I'm going to need you to let me love you and allow me to be everything that I can for you.
I'm going to need you not to push me away or keep me tapping on the windows of your mind and heart.
I'm going to need you to show me where it hurts, so that I can light a candle in your darkness. And when I show you the caverns of pain in my soul, I'm going to need you to trek gently through them, trusting that even the most extensive caves eventually lead to a tunnel of light.
I'm going to need you to want to work things out and be willing to work at it when it feels like it won't.
Let's text each other back. Let's always make plans for the next time we'll see each other. Let's not make the other feel like they have to work to fill up more than their half of this whole. Let's turn this tightrope into solid ground with miles ahead.
I'm going to need you. And that's the contract that we make.
I'm going to need you. Do you need me too?
